From the Director:

IOOS Community,

As 2020 draws to a close, I’m reflecting on the challenge this year has brought us. I am so proud of our IOOS team for the resiliency they have exhibited as we continue to advance the IOOS mission. Their hard work, dedication, and commitment this year, and every year, truly makes it a pleasure to work with our team every day. Thank you for another great year of making IOOS work!

As is our tradition, please enjoy the annual IOOS Holiday Song below. Thank you to our creative IOOS elves for putting this together. The Eyes on the Ocean newsletter is taking a break for the holidays. We will resume our regular production schedule of the newsletter in late January 2021.

Happy holidays and best wishes for a happy and healthy new year,
Carl

“Ocean Obs Rock” (set to the tune of “Jingle Bell Rock”)

Ocean obs, ocean obs, ocean obs rock,

Moored buoys swing and gliders send pings,

Gath'ring and sending up ocean info,

Now the ocean breeze starts to blow.

Ocean obs, ocean obs, ocean obs rock,

Data flow chimes in nearly real time,

ESPs sampling in targeted zones,

in their benthic homes.

Coastal modeling, ecoforecasting,

To see how the waves tip,

Ocean obs time is a swell time,

To go sailing on a research ship.

Hurry up IOOS regions, look at the view,

Observin’ around the clock,

Mix and a-mingle serving data to you,

that's why ocean obs rock!

Ocean obs, ocean obs, ocean obs rock,

Radars send chimes from sandy coastlines,

Observin’ and sensin’ with robots and drones,

In the coastal zone.

And the OTT, new technology

To look for DNA

With telemetry for Biology,

To go glidin’ with seals for a day.

Hurry up IOOS regions, look at the view,

Observin’ around the clock,

Mix and a-mingle serving data to you,

that's why ocean obs,

that's why ocean obs,

that's why ocean obs rock!
