This new high-frequency radar antenna is installed along Cook Inlet to monitor surface currents. Data from this HFR will gather data critical to marine navigation toward Anchorage and the Port of Alaska and to NOAA’s Cook Inlet Operational Forecast System. Dear IOOS Community,

For those of us in the DC-area, we’ve made it through the cold and snow that marked February and we’re enjoying some warmer weather as we head into spring. The Cherry Blossom Festival is a highlight of early spring for the DC area, and for us at IOOS, it brings us a chance to meet face-to-face with the 11 IOOS Regional Associations.

The IOOS Regional Associations (RAs) and members of the IOOS Office will be attending the IOOS Spring Meeting here in Washington, DC. It’s one of two meetings a year where representatives from all of the RAs, The IOOS Association, and the IOOS Office come together and chart our course.

This year is especially significant to me because we’re celebrating 25 years of IOOS. It’s been a privilege to be a part of this dynamic, skilled, and hard-working group since its inception, and I’m constantly impressed by the dedication and ingenuity of the entire IOOS Enterprise year after year. We’ve come a long way in 25 years, and I’m looking forward to helping to write our next chapter!

Thanks,
Carl

Observing Systems, Data, and Modeling

AOOS and the University of Alaska Fairbanks have added a new CODAR SeaSonde® oceanographic HF-radar site (SDPD) in Cook Inlet, Alaska to the IOOS HFR National Network, deployed in conjunction with the Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council and Hilcorp Alaska, LLC.  Installation of a second SeaSonde is planned for April, and together these HFRs will provide ocean surface current measurements in Cook Inlet.

Wave buoy: CDIP 156 Monterey Canyon Outer, CA was re-established on January 30, 2025, with station funding provided by U.S. IOOS and SCCOOS. CDIP's moored wave buoy array now spans the Monterey Bay region, together with stations sponsored by US Army Corps of Engineers, California State Parks, and the Naval Postgraduate School. See the data here.

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Forecast System (CBEFS) has been added to the IOOS Model Viewer! This model, developed by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in collaboration with MARACOOS and supported by the IOOS Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed, provides forecasts and nowcasts of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and other physical and chemical factors within the Chesapeake Bay. Explore the model output here!

January's IOOS DMAC Tech webinar, titled "Erddap2agol: Bridging Data Services and WebGIS for the Next Generation of Marine Science,” featured guest speaker Jerad King from the Gulf of America Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS). Missed it? Want to watch it again? Find the recording here.

The updated State of the Science Fact Sheet on HABs is now available on the NOAA Science Council website.

Southeast Alaska is considered an ocean acidification hotspot and monitoring efforts from a multitude of groups have contributed to understanding conditions there. Check out a new 4-page brochure that includes maps of inside waters and how we can interpret what is known so far.
