The Alaska Ocean Observing System works with agencies and other organizations to provide coastal and ocean data and information products to the public through collaborative networks and our online Ocean Data Explorer portal.

Distinguishing Characteristics of the Alaska region:

  • Alaska is the largest state in the United States and the only Arctic state. With 33,904 miles of shoreline, Alaska has more coastline than all other U.S. states combined and borders both the Pacific and Arctic Oceans.
  • AOOS supports projects across Alaska that monitor and help us understand the state’s dynamic coastal and marine environments.
  • Through partnerships and collaborations, AOOS fulfill its mission to sustain ocean observations, share ocean information, and connect researchers with Alaskan residents and communities.
  • AOOS provides access to ocean data, products, and tools through the Ocean Data Explorer portal, which brings together scientific and management information on the biological, chemical, and physical characteristics of Alaska and its surrounding waters.
